Math calculator that shows the steps

Arithmetic is answered as you type, right under the box, free and unlimited: fractions, powers, roots, π, sin and cos. When the problem needs working (an equation to solve, something to factor, a derivative) press "Solve step by step" and the solver writes it out line by line.

    Two speeds in one box

An ordinary calculator stops at the number. This one gives you the number instantly and, when you want to see how to get there, the full working. The instant answer runs in your browser, so it never uses one of your daily solves. Anything with an equals sign or a variable (solve 2x + 5 = 17, factor x² − 9, the derivative of x³) goes to the step-by-step solver instead.

Fractions come back as fractions as well as decimals (3/4 + 2/5 = 23/20 = 1.15). Trig functions show the answer in degrees and in radians, because which one your question wants is the most common calculator mistake there is.

How to get the most out of it

    1. Type the expression. Use / for fractions, ^ for powers, sqrt( or √( for roots, pi or π.
    2. Read the instant answer under the box. Fractions and both angle units are shown when they apply.
    3. For equations or algebra, press "Solve step by step" to get the working.
    4. After solving, the Copy button on the solution board copies the whole working as text.

A note for parents. The solver is most useful after your child has tried the problem. Compare their work with the steps and find the first line where they differ; that line is the thing to practise.

    FAQ

    Is the instant answer free?

Yes, unlimited. It is calculated in your browser and never counts against the 3 free step-by-step solutions a day.

What can the instant calculator do?

Add, subtract, multiply, divide, powers, square roots, π and e, sin, cos and tan (in degrees and radians), ln and log. Brackets and implied multiplication like 2(3 + 4) work.

Why does it say "press Solve" for my question?

Because it has an equals sign or a letter in it, which means there is something to solve rather than just evaluate. The step-by-step solver handles that and shows the working.

    Does it round?

The instant answer shows up to 10 significant figures and the exact fraction when there is a simple one. The solver gives exact forms first (like 49π) and then a decimal.
